Research expeditions to China and Mongolia, and thus also to the Mongolian Orkhon Valley, began in the second half of the 19th century and were generally of a universal scientific nature. In 1873, for example, the Russian Paderin described for the first time the highly walled area of the city complex of Karabalgasun, which is still visible today. The first expedition with a clearly archaeological focus was undertaken by a group of researchers led by N. M. Jadrincev in the Orkhon Valley in 1889. As with the journey of the Finnish ethnologist Axel Heikel, the focus was on examining the surviving inscription stones of the trilingual inscription, which recounts important events in Chinese, Sogdian and Turkish runic script.

Expedition of Wilhelm Radloff

The most important investigation of this period must be considered to be the preparation of a city map and a detailed description of the city complex, which was produced as part of an expedition led by the Turkologist Wilhelm Radloff in 1891 and published in the Atlas der Alterthümer in 1892.The interdisciplinary expedition spent 12 days on the site of Karabalgasun and clearly identified parts of the area as the remains of the old Uyghur city, while the district known today as the temple or palace city had to be considered Mongolian at the time. Overall, this expedition was also limited to descriptive investigations and did not undertake any further archaeological research. However, the plan of the city drawn up at the time was extremely detailed and correct in essential points and was drawn with good powers of observation.

                                    <figure id="block_e407f3bfeb8da2420c1fc5b692107dce--image-650" class="current" data-src="https://orchontal.de/en/wp-content/uploads/Radloff_4.webp" data-thumb-src="https://orchontal.de/en/wp-content/uploads/Radloff_4-150x150.webp" data-caption="Map of Karabalgasun and the temple and palace city in Radloff's "Atlas der Alterthümer"">

Map of Karabalgasun and the temple and palace city in Radloff’s “Atlas der Alterthümer” © DAI

                            <figure id="block_e407f3bfeb8da2420c1fc5b692107dce--image-652" class="" data-src="https://orchontal.de/en/wp-content/uploads/Radloff.webp" data-thumb-src="https://orchontal.de/en/wp-content/uploads/Radloff-150x150.webp" data-caption="Title page of the "Atlas der Alterthümer"">

Title page of the “Atlas der Alterthümer” © DAI

Initial Archaeological Investigations

Archaeological investigations only began in the first half of the 20th century and were mainly carried out by Russian archaeologists. Other archaeologists, such as Bukinic and Kiselev, also spent time in the Orkon Valley in the 1930s and 1940s. While Bukinic carried out smaller and as yet unpublished investigations in Karabalgasun, the Russian archaeologist Kiselev, in addition to his extensive excavations in Karakorum, also made some test cuts in Karabalgasun, which were mainly in the area of the temple and palace city, but only published as very small sections.

Records of the Maskov Expedition © DAI

Excavation plan of the Maskov Expedition in Karabalgasun © DAI

The Mongolian-German Orkhon Expedition

Based on these preliminary investigations, the archaeological work has been continued since 2007 in a long-term project by the Mongolian Academy of Sciences, the National University of Ulaanbaatar and the German Archaeological Institute as the Mongolian-German Orkhon Expedition (MONDOrEX). The aim of the project is to answer further questions about the structure and organization of the two nomadic city complexes Karabalgasun and Karakorum, as well as to gain insights into their supply, the building techniques used and their integration into the geographical environment of the Orkhon valley. As there have been hardly any archaeological studies on the early Uyghur period to date, there are only a few comparable research projects. An airborne laser scan plan created in 2007, which was supplemented in 2018/2019, still forms the basis of the Mongolian-German Orkhon Expedition’s research today. While the plan drawn up by Wilhelm Radloff already covered large parts of the city complex, the laser scan plan shows the size, layout and structure of the city on a completely new scale.

Airbourne-Lidarscan of Karabalgasun © Arctron

The City Map Expanded in 2018/19

    <picture>

    </picture>

        Extended laser scan map of Karabalgasun © H.
