Historical Sources on Karabalgasun<\/h1>\n

In contrast to the famous city of Karakorum, there are only a few written sources that report on the Uyghur capital of Karabalgasun. The name of the city is often not clearly recorded, which makes it difficult to be sure that it was actually Karabalgasun.<\/p>\n <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n

“City of Kings”<\/h2>\n

One example is the Persian traveler Juvayni, who visited Karakorum in the 13th century and referred to the nearby ruins as Ordu Baliq, “City of the King”. The capital of the Uyghurs is also mentioned several times in Chinese sources. In the Chiu Tang-shu it is referred to as Hui-ho cheng, the city of the Uyghurs, and in the Liao Shi it appears as “Woluduo cheng”, city of the royal camp, and as Buguhan cheng, city of the Bogu Qayan.<\/p>\n <\/div>\n <\/section>\n\n\n

Chinese Chronicles and Inscription Stones<\/h2>\n

The Chinese chronicles documenting political events often provide valuable information about China’s northern neighbours, including the Uyghurs. While these accounts are factual, they always reflect the Chinese point of view and thus show Uyghur and Mongolian history from an outside perspective.<\/p>\n

Another source of information is the stone steles erected by the Uyghurs in their tribal territory. Two important inscriptions date from the time of the first Uyghur qayanate: the Tariat inscription (747-759) and the Sine-Usu inscription (759). While the Tariat inscription does not contain any direct references to Karabalgasun, the Sine-Usu inscription provides geographical information that could be relevant to the location of the old capital. This inscription was discovered in 1909 by the Finnish Turkologist Ramstedt and also mentions the city of Baj Baliq.<\/p>\n \n <\/div>\n
